Susan V. Demers

Susan DemersSusan V. Demers is a native of New York City and is a graduate of New York University’s Washington Square College of Arts and Science (B.A., 1974) and New York University’s School of Law (J.D., 1977). She was admitted to practice in 1978 in New York; in 1979 in the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York; in 1981 in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit; in 1988 in U.S. Supreme Court; and in 1994 in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Ms. Demers was admitted to practice as a solicitor of England and Wales and the British Virgin Islands (BVI) in 2001 and awarded the Higher Courts (Civil Proceedings) Qualification by the Law Society of England and Wales in 2003. However, Ms. Demers does not currently hold a practising certificate in England and Wales. Ms. Demers was in private practice in New York from1977-1978 and in the BVI from 2001-2003.

Ms. Demers served as a Staff Attorney and Director of the Matrimonial Unit in the Bronx Neighborhood Office of the Legal Aid Society from 1978-1982 and as an Assistant District Attorney and Deputy Bureau Chief (Criminal Court Bureau) in the Office of the District Attorney of Queens County, New York from 1982-1983. In 1984, Ms. Demers joined the Administration of Governor Mario M. Cuomo of New York, where she served from 1984-1988 as Associate Commissioner and Deputy General Counsel and from 1988-1994 as Deputy Commissioner and General Counsel in the New York State Department of Social Services (DSS).

Susan DemersDuring her tenure at DSS, Ms. Demers supervised and managed one of the largest government law offices in New York, with a staff of over 150 lawyers and 150 support staff persons. Since 1994, Ms. Demers has served as a Legal Consultant on various issues of social welfare policy. After moving to the BVI in 1995, she became a Legal Consultant to the Government of the BVI on domestic violence issues and was the Chairperson of the Domestic Violence Coordinating Council for several years. Ms. Demers also spent 5 years in the offshore financial services industry where she served as a Trust Officer, Trust Manager and Director of Trust and Fiduciary Services for an international financial services company.

Ms. Demers has been a trainer in matrimonial law and trial practice in New York. Her article about her experiences with litigation in the Cuomo Administration, The Failures of Litigation as a Tool for the Development of Social Welfare Policy, was published at 22 Fordham Urban Law Journal 1009 (1995). Ms. Demers’ main practice areas are Trusts and Estates, Corporate Law, Civil Litigation and Family Law. She is a member of the BVI Bar Association, the Law Society of England and Wales (non-practising), the International Bar Association, the Solicitors’ Association of Higher Court Advocates and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.

 

LaKeisha K. John

LaKeisha K. JohnLaKeisha K. John is a national of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. In 2008, Ms. John obtained her Bachelor of Laws degree with honours from the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill in Barbados. She went on to obtain a Legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago in 2011.

Ms. John has since been admitted to practice before the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the British Virgin Islands.

Ms. John is a zealous and dedicated attorney. She has joined our Firm with over three years of experience as a practicing attorney in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. During these years, she has dealt with Magisterial, High Court and Court of Appeal matters. Ms. John’s areas of practice include civil litigation, debt collection, personal injury claims and family law.
