Susan V. Demers

Susan V. Demers is a native of New York City and is a graduate of New York University’s Washington Square College of Arts and Science (B.A., 1974) and New York University’s School of Law (J.D., 1977). She was admitted to practice in 1978 in New York; in 1979 in the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York; in 1981 in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit; in 1988 in U.S. Supreme Court; and in 1994 in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Ms. Demers was admitted to practice as a solicitor of England and Wales and the British Virgin Islands (BVI) in 2001 and awarded the Higher Courts (Civil Proceedings) Qualification by the Law Society of England and Wales in 2003. However, Ms. Demers does not currently hold a practising certificate in England and Wales. Ms. Demers was in private practice in New York from 1977-1978 and in the BVI from 2001-2003.
Ms. Demers served as a Staff Attorney and Director of the Matrimonial Unit in the Bronx Neighborhood Office of the Legal Aid Society from 1978-1982 and as an Assistant District Attorney and Deputy Bureau Chief (Criminal Court Bureau) in the Office of the District Attorney of Queens County, New York from 1982-1983. In 1984, Ms. Demers joined the Administration of Governor Mario M. Cuomo of New York, where she served from 1984-1988 as Associate Commissioner and Deputy General Counsel and from 1988-1994 as Deputy Commissioner and General Counsel in the New York State Department of Social Services (DSS).
